Tutorial: Making 3D Text In Motion3 PDF Print E-mail

The final movie shows that you can apply lighting effects and these will affect the Replicator to add to the 3d look.

The examples I’ve done here are not necessarily something I’d create, but I hope its given you some insight into creating 3D text within Motion. There are many controls in the Replicator for adjusting the colour, gradient and lighting of the text depth, so have a good go experimenting.

Have fun, I've uploaded the project here so you can pick it apart and use it as a basis for your projects. One word of warning - Remember I said earlier to get your text the right size? Well, I've noticed that if you start altering the text after the replication, funny things happen.

You never know, there might be a software update tomorrow that adds 3D text into Motion!

Fantanstic
written by Stephen Bennett on June 27, 2007

I just used your tutorial to make a 3D logo animate. I had a JPG file and brought it into Motion...It had a white background...I applied a Color Key filter to make the background transparent...then exporting it as a single frame TIF with alpha..then followed your tutorial to make the logo 3D...it's a kludge but after staring at Blender for an hour, playing with Daz3D for hours and giving up...this was a splendid workaround.

PS: I'm using the logo as part of a lower thirds scrolling text Station ID animation...the logo was LOW pixel size to begin with but it should be sufficient to impress the client..and perhaps have them hand over a higher resolution version for me to play with!

Thanks again!

SB

PS: I am enjoying the Volumetrix plugins and am looking forward to more toys from you!

Great

I think it is a hell of a tutorial, in a much needed subject, after reading the tutorial I kept playing with it. The white of the psuedo-depth was buggin' me, and I don't know if it is obvius but I made coloration of replicator, over pattern and set the origin front which made coloration of the depth possible. =)

Thanks

Different Extrude Method
written by Torben Suhrke on September 26, 2007

The problem with the direction the replicator extrudes to can be fixed like this: I figured out that one can also use the parameter line instead of box. Then you can simply change the z-parameter under end point to extrude. (you also have to reset the x-parameter under start and end point to zero)

Hope that helps,
Torben
